You want to make a lot more art. But somehow, you don’t.
Art Gym™ is a practice system for artists who keep falling out of practice.
Or when you do get going, you can’t quite trust that you’ll keep going.
Art Gym™ helps you find where your practice breaks, train what is getting in the way, and build a practice you know how to keep alive.
Self-paced Art Gym™ Foundations videos to keep · Personal Practice Diagnosis · 4 Live Online Practice Labs + replays

The problem isn’t a lack of tutorials.
You can have books, courses, materials, saved videos and plenty of knowledge about art and still freeze when you are alone with your own practice. Art Gym™ works on what happens between knowing and actually making.
Knowing how to make art and knowing how to keep making it are different skills.
You do not need another promise to “make more art.”You need to understand the gap between wanting to make and actually making, then train what helps you cross it.
Start hereWhere does your practice break?
You don’t need to recognise yourself in all of these. One is enough.
“I want to make, but I don’t begin.”
You buy the sketchbook. You sharpen the pencils. You watch someone else draw for 47 minutes. An impressive amount of preparation has occurred. No drawing has occurred.
“I start, then disappear.”
I get going, sometimes brilliantly. Then life interrupts, a project finishes or the first burst of energy fades. A few quiet days become weeks.
“Every mark feels like a test.”
The work has to be good too quickly. One difficult drawing feels like evidence that I’m not good enough. Practising starts becoming proving.
“I don’t know what to practise.”
I save tutorials, research materials and think about art far more than I make it. Alone with my practice I still don’t know what would actually help today.
The problem isn’t who you are. It’s where the practice is breaking down.
Art Gym™ helps you find where the practice breaks, then work on that.
That is why the founding programme begins with your Personal Practice Diagnosis.
Diagnose. Train. Return.
Diagnose
Find where the practice is actually breaking.
Train
Choose focused practice for what actually needs attention.
Return
Build reliable ways back into making after interruption.
The minimum can be tiny. The practice doesn’t have to be.
Some Art Gym™ reps take only seconds. That small contact can do two things at once.
They keep the practice available
Small reps make contact with art easy enough that you can begin, stay connected and return without needing a major studio session.
They train real artistic capacities
Different reps train different capacities:
seeing · proportion · accuracy · control · attention · hand-eye coordination · rehearsal · correction
Every rep keeps the practice alive. Different reps train different capacities.
And because every day does not have to become a major painting or drawing session, you make room for another part of artistic practice too: looking · gathering · thinking · experimenting · recovering · considering ideas · letting intuition work.
You can stay connected to your art without demanding finished art from yourself every day. Then, when it is time to make the bigger work, you are not beginning from zero.
The floor can be a few seconds. The practice can last a lifetime.
You are not just building consistency. You are training the artist.
Art Gym™ works on three things at once: the hand, the response and the practice.
Train the hand
Seeing · accuracy · proportion · control · attention · hand-eye coordination · rehearsal
Train the response
Starting · judgement · perfectionism · resistance · correction · returning
Build your practice
Recognise what your practice needs · choose or build a useful rep · adapt when life interrupts · increasingly manage the practice yourself
You can get better at the fundamentals without every exercise having to become a finished artwork.
Small, focused reps create more opportunities to repeat, notice, correct and develop. These capacities support realism, abstraction, painting, drawing, print, sculpture, mixed media and other visual practices.
Art Gym™ trains the artist, not a single style.
What you see is the finished artwork.
What you don’t see is everything happening in the background.
They do not require a masterpiece every time they sit down. Practice is not performance.
Finished artwork is match play.Art Gym™ is where you train.
Nobody expects a footballer to play the Champions League every time they touch a ball.
Inconsistency is rarely just procrastination.
“Will I ever properly get back to my work?”
“Why do I only seem to work in bursts?”
“If I’m hardly drawing or painting, can I really call myself an artist?”
You do not stop being an artist between artworks.
Art Gym™ is not only for artists who have stopped completely. It also shows what practice can look like between major pieces and long studio sessions. It can include:
The point is not constant production. It is staying in relationship with your practice while leaving room for ideas, observation, thinking and intuition.
A different way to build an art habit.
Art Gym™ helps you make the doorway smaller, stay in contact with the work, and learn how to return when the rhythm breaks.
The habit isn’t “I never stop.”The habit becomes “I know how to come back.”
Your practice does not require a ceremonial reopening. One line will do.
What if you haven’t lost your passion?
The early rush of a new project fades. Progress slows. It is easy to read that as proof the passion has gone. Often it hasn’t. A sustainable creative life cannot depend on excitement alone.
The dip is not necessarily lost passion. It may simply be the point where inspiration needs to become practice.
From“I keep losing the thread.”To“I know how to keep my practice alive.”
- I can get myself moving without waiting to feel inspired.
- I can strengthen the skills underneath my art, such as seeing, proportion, accuracy, control and attention, without every session having to become a finished piece.
- I know what to practise between bigger pieces instead of drifting or wondering what counts.
- When life interrupts, I know how to return without needing a dramatic restart.
- I’m becoming more capable of running my own practice for the long haul.
Small, focused practice can compound into much bigger changes in what you’re able to make.
No tortured-genius cosplay required.
One clear job each week.
Map Your Gap
Identify where intention becomes friction and where your practice currently breaks.
Stop Fighting the Work
Work with judgement, perfectionism, correction and difficulty without making one bad session mean something about you as an artist.
Train, Don’t Perform
Train seeing, proportion, accuracy, attention, control and rehearsal without demanding finished work every session.
Build Your Own Gym
Learn how to identify what your own practice needs, choose or invent useful reps and build a simple system for continuing afterwards.
The goal is not to do Sarmed’s exercises forever. The goal is to learn how to feed your own practice.
Everything in the founding round.
Art Gym™ Foundations video programme
Self-paced training videos explaining the Art Gym™ method, foundational reps and the practice skills underneath the work. Watch in your own time.
Keep access after the four-week live founding cohort ends.
Personal Art Practice Diagnosis
A short questionnaire plus a private 15–20 minute conversation with Sarmed to identify where your practice tends to break and what may be most useful to work on first.
Four Live Online Practice Labs
Small-group online sessions. Practise, ask questions, troubleshoot what happened, receive feedback and work out useful next moves.
All four Labs are recorded. Founding artists keep access to the replays.
Practical Reps + Resources
Exercises and tools for training specific capacities and finding a way back into practice.
Ten artists, worked with closely.
This is the first small paid Art Gym™ cohort, limited to ten artists.
The Art Gym method and Foundations are being developed from Sarmed’s teaching and artistic practice. The founding round creates a small environment where he can work closely with each artist, see how the system operates in real practice and refine it through real use.
Practical. Supportive. Playful enough to experiment. Serious enough to help you grow.
The four-week cohort ends. The Foundations videos and Practice Lab replays stay with you.

YouTube subscriberThis came from lived creative practice, not productivity theory.
Sarmed Mirza is an award-winning British-Asian multidisciplinary artist, educator and BAFTA Scotland New Talent-nominated filmmaker. He trained seriously in drawing and painting, including classical atelier practice, but discovered that knowing how to make art and knowing how to keep making it were different skills.
Across both writing and visual art he lived the pattern: intense productive periods, then gaps, procrastination, overthinking and the uncomfortable question of whether he would properly return. Over time he learned to make the doorway smaller, stay in contact with the work, train specific capacities separately and get better at coming back.
Small studies, repeated contact with the work and learning how to return accumulated into larger bodies of work, including Zero Ground: ReGenesis, exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy.
The approach grew across different creative disciplines. This founding Art Gym™ cohort is designed specifically for visual artists.
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- You genuinely want to make art but sometimes cannot get yourself moving.
- You have tutorials, books, materials or ideas but still get lost when you are alone with your practice.
- You work in bursts and struggle to return.
- You want to build real artistic skill without every session having to produce a successful finished piece.
- You want to train both the physical capacities underneath your art and how you respond when the work becomes difficult.
- You want useful feedback without handing over your artistic direction.
- You want to become increasingly able to read and manage your own practice.
You don’t need a perfect streak. You need to know what to do when the streak breaks.
This probably isn’t for you if you want
- A passive course you collect without practising.
- A magic system that depends on never experiencing distraction, resistance or doubt again.
- Therapy or mental-health treatment.
- Someone else to decide what your art should look like or where your artistic direction should go.
You receive feedback, diagnosis and guidance. The artistic decisions remain yours.
Questions
Will this work if I paint abstractly, work realistically, sculpt or use another medium?
Yes. Art Gym™ is about artistic practice and the capacities underneath it, not a particular style or medium. Some exercises use drawing because it is immediate and accessible, but the principles support artists working across media.
Is this mainly about procrastination?
No. Procrastination may be one symptom. Art Gym™ also works with starting, returning, perfectionism, judgement, uncertainty about what to practise, artistic training and ownership of your practice.
Do I need hours every day?
No. Part of the method is learning how to keep useful contact with your practice even when a full studio session isn’t possible.
What if I miss a live Lab?
The Practice Labs are recorded, and founding artists keep access to the replays.
Do I keep the course?
Yes. The self-paced Art Gym™ Foundations videos remain available after the live four-week founding round ends.
When are the live sessions?
The founding cohort dates and Live Lab schedule will be arranged before the cohort begins, to maximise availability for the ten founding artists. All Labs are recorded.
