The Salmon Ground
This began as a single handshake, in the backdrop of barbed wire and drawn in ink by the artist. Each variation tells a different story.
Bathed in salmon pink, a colour too often mistaken for softness.
But this is not a passive hue.
It is the colour of flesh in motion, of muscle memory, of survival.
It is the colour of the salmon, swimming upstream to spawn, to die, to give life.
Salmon return to the river of their birth with the last of their strength.
So do we, in different ways.
We return to difficult conversations, broken histories, wounded borders.
But return is also resistance. It is the instinct to continue.
This colour is also gendered, feminised, commercialised, misunderstood. But feminine energy is not light or weak.
It is the only force capable of creating new life.
That, too, is what this handshake holds:
not peace,
not closure,
but a ground for rebirth.
