“Packed with so much soul. Thank you for speaking for many people who go through cultural conflicts every day within themselves.”
About the book
The Handshake: Zero Ground is a limited-edition artist’s book that wrestles with dirty handshakes, beautiful bombs, and the theatre of belonging.
It dives into everything from crushed fingers and limp grips to borderlines drawn in hair-thin strands that start wars. With raw honesty, biting humour and emotional precision, Sarmed Mirza moves between Star Trek diplomacy, cricket feuds, and the quiet violence of expectation, while unravelling the complexities of being a Pakistani-British artist in self-exile.
Blending ink drawings, essays, and poetic fragments, the book walks through memory, masculinity, absurdity, and the search for connection in a divided world. It is the first time the full Handshake narrative appears in print.
It includes high-quality reproductions of all eight artworks in the Handshake series, along with additional unseen images from the artist’s archive.
Excerpts
“I had crossed a line I hadn’t seen until I stepped over it. I had killed a friend. A co-star. Someone I didn’t know I was meant to protect.”
“I love a good handshake, warm, medium grip, two to five seconds. It’s momentary, yet momentous. Like a good, well-meaning orgasm.”
