Emergence

£18,000

Zero Ground is an ongoing body of work shaped by questions of attention and care in a world that rarely stops.

Working in oil paint at a small, hand-held scale, the project imagines beginning again, not biologically, but perceptually. Each painting measures just 2 × 3 inches. Individually modest, the works accumulate into larger fields where attention shifts between the fragment and the whole.

Rather than depicting recognisable forms, the work unfolds through fragments and repetition, allowing things to register gradually rather than declare themselves all at once. Distance gives way to proximity. What first appears as pattern begins to read as encounter.

What emerges is not a narrative of loss, but a quiet reorganisation: an emotional ecology shaped by memory, instinct, restraint and repetition. Each small painting becomes a presence within something larger, discovered through the repeated act of making and looking.

Zero Ground does not offer solutions. It leaves room for attention to return.

ReGenesis was first exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy as part of the Society of Scottish Artists’ 127th Annual Exhibition, 11 January to 4 February, during the RSA Bicentenary.
