My Why

I am an award-winning Glasgow artist, with work shown in the Scottish Portrait Awards and the Scottish Prize for Fine Art, and shortlisted for the John Moores Painting Prize. I’m also a member of the Paisley Art Institute, the Society of Scottish Artists, and Visual Arts Scotland.

My teaching blends technique with mindfulness. Students don’t just learn to draw or paint, they learn to see. Many discover details they’ve never noticed before, enriching both their art and daily life. Small classes and personal guidance create a welcoming space where learning is a shared journey.

YOUR WHY

  • Crack the code – make art enjoyable and rewarding
  • Explore a hobby – relax and discover creativity
  • Boost coursework skills – build a strong foundation for studies
  • Serious pursuit – refine techniques and complete projects
  • Create gifts – portraits of loved ones or pets

  • Gift a class – give someone a unique creative experience

can anyone learn to draw and paint

I learned to draw later in life, which is why I know anyone can do it. I’ve guided many students who once thought they “couldn’t draw a straight line.” With guidance and practice, complete beginners often surprise themselves.

If you’ve ever thought “I can’t draw, I’ve tried…”, don’t worry, I’ll show you that you can. Even artists with major physical challenges create incredible work. With patience and the right approach, progress is always possible.

classes for all levels

Learn at your own level — from first marks to master techniques.

Drawing 101

A step by step introduction to drawing. You will learn how to set up a drawing, measure proportions, use light and shade, and build up a complete piece, often a portrait. Ideal for beginners, returners, or anyone wanting stronger foundations.

Drawing Advanced

For those with some experience. Tackle more complex projects such as portraits, still life, or Bargue studies. We will focus on likeness, value, form, and precision, refining good habits and deepening your skills.

Painting 101

Painting is drawing with paint. Learn brushwork, colour mixing, layering, and composition in acrylics or water mixable oils. Projects can range from portraits to landscapes or still life. All materials are provided, so you can simply enjoy experimenting.

Painting Intermediate and Advanced

Push your painting further. Explore glazing, impasto, chiaroscuro, palette knife work, and more, or focus on your own project with friendly guidance. Whether you prefer tight realism or loose brushstrokes, you will learn techniques to expand your range.

Wherever you are on your journey, you’ll find the next step here.

STUDENT REVIEWS
STUDENT REVIEWS
"Painting and drawing without expectations was a mind-blowing thing. When I’ve done art before I’ve put pressure on myself. It felt like a relief, like I was capable of just doing something. It was like a burden had been lifted off me."
— Mental Health Foundation 'Our Power' project participant
STUDENT REVIEWS
I didn’t know how to draw someone before the workshops. But the way Sarmed taught us instantly made us so interesting. When I came home after that first workshop I kept drawing and drawing. At first I couldn’t really do it, but now I am drawing very well. I can now draw so close to how someone looks.
