Tiny Painting in a Tin: Bute Workshop
Sunday 5 July
12pm to 4:45pm
£85 per person

Join artist and tutor Sarmed Mirza for a relaxed tiny painting workshop on the Isle of Bute.

In this workshop, you will create a small 2 x 3 inch painting inside a portable tin, inspired by Bute, memory, place, colour and observation.

The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as people with some painting experience. You will be guided step by step through choosing a subject, simplifying an image, building a small composition, mixing colours and creating a finished tiny painting to take home. We will use mainly acrylic, but I will also provide watermixable oils.

The workshop will take place indoors, so we can paint comfortably whatever the weather. If the weather is suitable, we may begin with a short mindful reference-gathering walk and excercise nearby, where participants can take photos and notice colours, textures, architecture, sea, sky, landscape or small details from Bute. If the weather is not suitable, we will work indoors from photographs, printed references, or images participants bring with them.

You are welcome to bring 1 to 3 photographs of Bute or another place that means something to you. Please choose images that are not too complicated. Simple landscapes, buildings, windows, sea views, flowers, pathways, reflections or small details can work very well.

Schedule:

12pm to 2pm
Introduction, mindful looking, choosing references, composition and first painting stage.

2pm to 2:45pm
Lunch break. Please bring your own lunch or snacks, or you may be able to pop out locally depending on the venue.

2:45pm to 4:45pm
Colour mixing, building the painting, finishing touches and photographing the finished works.

All main painting materials will be provided.

Please bring:

  • A phone or camera for taking reference photos
  • 1 to 3 possible reference images, if you have them, on the phone or printed
  • I will also provide some suitable references.
  • An apron or clothes you do not mind getting a little paint on
  • Lunch or snacks for the break
  • Any favourite small brushes or painting materials, if you already have them, though this is optional

The workshop will go ahead once a minimum of 6 places have been booked. If the minimum number is not reached, bookings will be refunded.
