Cherry Day

Painting 001 from The 1000 Paintings Project

Original oil painting on archival, museum-grade Ampersand Gessobord, presented in a portable mint tin containing the palette used to create the work.

Years ago during lockdown, I painted a small cherry painting during an online accountability session with a group of artists I had met through Meetup. At the time, I was simply trying to stay connected to painting, attention, and the act of making things.

That small painting unexpectedly led me towards painting small, allowing me to iterate, experiment, and refine my choices more quickly. It eventually opened the path towards my Monument Valley series and later ReGenesis, my installation of hundreds of small paintings shown at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh.

Now, returning to painting small again, it somehow felt right to begin with cherries once more. This time I added a folded napkin too, perhaps to wipe the mouth after one cherry too many.

This painting is the first of The 1000 Paintings Project, an ongoing series exploring observation, repetition, memory, and the emotional residue of ordinary moments.

The tin functions as easel, protective carry case, and display object, carrying traces of the painting process itself through the remaining colour palette.
