This is a prelude to Zero Ground: The Handshake, my upcoming series exploring fractured trust, conflict and reluctant unity.
This triptych lives in the moment before contact.
The aftermath of collapse.
The sterile calm after an emotional detonation.
The first panel (System Error) is fractured by surveillance lines, barbed logic and corrupted code. A civilisation glitching, haunted by the invisible machinery of power that profits from confusion and crisis.
The second (Reset) shows partial repair, a neutralising of conflict.
But neutrality is not peace.
It is compliance, often shaped by those who remain unseen and untouched.
The third panel is (Untitled). A near-blank surface.
It could be silence, denial, surrender or the space required to begin again.
Look closely.
A faded barbed wire remains in the corner.
The system hasn’t disappeared.
It has only retreated, waiting.
The real danger is not just out there, but in here.
In our capacity to forget.
To adopt the habits of power.
To become what once oppressed us if the tide turns in our favour.
Before hands can meet, this ground must be crossed.
Before the handshake, there is zero ground.
This work is that ground.
The sequel to this piece, Zero Ground: The Handshake, will be exhibited at this venue from 24–29 June 2025.
